Our ImpactH

Free Legal Aid Society for the Helpless

(FLASH), registered and fully active since
2005, is an initiative to assist the poor in dire
need of legal aid, particularly, the ones
languishing in jails endlessly for not having
enough funds and knowledge essential for
exercising their fundamental right to fairtrial
before the courts.
As a result of its free legal aid a large number
of such prisoners have been released upon
acquittal by the superior courts, who had
been sentenced to death or life imprisonment
by the subordinate courts.

RATIONALE

A vast majority of Pakistani population is impoverished, uninformed and illiterate; hence, unable to exercise the right to access to justice. Our system of administration of justice is based on adversarial principle that requires a party to prove its case itself, as opposed to the inquisitorial system, which makes the judge investigate and dig out the truth himself. Consequently, the maxim: ignorance of law is no excuse, is one of the most important principles of our justice system. However, in real life things are quite otherwise, because ignorance of the law is a very substantial cause of long undue imprisonment of a large number of prisoners. In numerous civil cases, too, the ignorant and deprived litigants have to pay quite often the price of ignorance and poverty by losing their cases. This necessitates action through organizations like FLASH.

VISION

FLASH envisions that the responsible and concerned citizens of Pakistan can make a huge difference at micro level to the lives of destitute persons in need of legal assistance as wellas their families and next generations by sponsoring their legal needs with finances and legal expertise. At macro level, it would inevitably be instrumental in shaping a just and fair society

FLASH vows to contribute towards building of a just, fair and egalitarian society, by making available free legal aid for the helpless without regard to their caste, creed, sex or race.
